City Hall letting neighborhood down with street light outages | Letters
I grew up in a Wisconsin suburb and moved to the poorest zip code in the state 19 years ago. During my time living here, my family and I have loved it. Yes, there are some annoyances, but the people who live here are great and continue to strive to make our community better.
Over the last year our streetlights haven’t been on consistently, being out for weeks at a time. In an area where many take the bus and walk at night, this is a safety issue. There has been community meetings, city officials meetings and calls to get the streetlights back on by many. The city reports that our neighborhood is the worst in the city for the streetlights being on due to the old system currently in place. They keep saying they will be fixed, but we have yet to see any progress.
The surprises about living in the 53206 zip don’t have anything to do with shootings or carjackings. The surprises come from a community that wants and is striving to be better, but the structures that are in place are dragging them down.
I urge the city to look at how poor communities are treated when it comes to the standard of living.
