Part 1 of a new traffic signal project at Sixth and Prairie is complete.

Contract crews for the Kansas Department of Transportation got the vehicular traffic lights working Thursday, replacing temporary signals in place for the past several weeks as part of a geometric improvement project.

Up next will be work to get the pedestrian crossing signals operating. A timetable for that work has not been announced.

The signal project heralds the approaching end of this work zone, which has included improvements for turning radius, curb and gutter, underground utilities, sidewalks and handicapped-accessible ramps. The new stoplights are Emporia’s first radar-based signals.

Work should officially be done later this month.
